Causes of shoulder pain

Disease or injury in shoulder joints can result in pain. Other common causes of shoulder pain are:

  • Torn tendon.
  • Tendonitis – inflammation of the tendons.
  • Bursitis – inflammation of a bursa (fluid-filled sac that lessens friction between tissues).
  • Instability – when the shoulder joint becomes too loose. This can lead to dislocation.
  • Arthritis – joint inflammation.
  • Fracture.

Pain in the shoulder can also be the result of problems elsewhere in the body, including the heart, gall-bladder, pancreas, neck, and mid-back.

Signs of shoulder problems

Symptoms of shoulder issues include:

  • Persistent stiffness or pain.
  • Pain that worsens with movement.
  • Weakness, numbness or a tingling sensation.
  • Pain on top of the shoulder.

Resting the shoulder and taking pain-killers may help to alleviate symptoms for a while, but they’re unlikely to provide effective long-term shoulder pain relief.

Natural remedies for shoulder pain

In some cases, shoulder pain may be mild at first, only occurring with certain movements. However, unless treated, increased wear and tear will result, causing worse pain.

For example, a shoulder dislocation left untreated can damage nerves, ligaments, and blood vessels. Conditions like bursitis in the shoulder become more difficult to treat effectively the longer the condition is allowed to progress.

Natural at-home remedies for shoulder problems include:

  • Compression wraps
  • Epsom salt bath
  • Massage
  • Turmeric paste
  • Stretching exercises

Chiropractic provides effective shoulder pain relief

Dr David Liew is well trained in medical diagnosis. Before any chiropractic treatment can begin, he’ll carry out a detailed examination to find out whether more serious conditions could be “referring” pain to your shoulder.

A misalignment in the shoulder can result in inflammation and muscle spasms. Thus, chiropractic adjustments can be made to realign the joint and its surrounding tissues. These procedures may involve a drop-piece technique and trigger point therapy.

Drop-piece technique

The drop-piece technique uses a special table with several sections called drop pieces. These units can be raised a fraction of an inch so that when a chiropractic thrust is applied, the table drops slightly. This opens the joint during the adjustment.

Hence, the drop-pieces assist the thrust while minimising the force required.

Trigger point therapy

Trigger point therapy can relieve pain caused by increased areas of sensitivity in a muscle. It entails the application of pressure by the thumb or finger, and Dr David Liew will be able to gauge immediately how the muscle is responding.

Manual manipulation

Manual manipulation of joints and muscle tissue can be used to provide frozen shoulder pain relief when ligaments stiffen, shorten, and swell and stick to one another.

Manipulation of the upper back and neck can also help to alleviate shoulder pain.

Dislocation recovery care

If you’re recovering after surgical or non-surgical treatment for a shoulder dislocation, Dr David Liew can use compression techniques to ensure proper healing by keeping the bones in place.
