Knowing if you’re suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS)

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) gets its name from the carpal bones in the wrist that connect the hand to the forearm.

CTS occurs when the median nerve going into the hand from the neck becomes compressed. It’s often caused by excessive pressure on the wrist and the nerve, which can result in inflammation and swelling.

Possible causes of carpal tunnel syndrome

Conditions associated with carpal tunnel pain include:

  • Trauma to the wrist.
  • Diabetes.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Thyroid dysfunction.
  • Fluid retention from menopause or pregnancy.
  • High blood pressure.

CTS can be aggravated if the wrist is repeatedly overextended, which worsens compression and swelling of the median nerve.

Activities that can make carpal tunnel syndrome worse include incorrect positioning of the wrists when using a computer keyboard or mouse, prolonged use of vibrating power tools, and repeated movements like typing or playing the piano.

Lifestyle factors that can increase the likelihood of CTS include a sedentary routine, smoking, high salt intake, and high body mass index (BMI).

Signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome

Symptoms of CTS typically start gradually and include tingling or numbness that comes and goes in the arm, index and middle fingers, and thumb. It can cause pain in the wrist and palm of the hand. Your hand may also become weak, leading to a tendency to drop things.

CTS mostly affects people aged 30 to 60 and is more common among women.

Without treatment, CTS can result in prolonged weakness and lack of co-ordination of the fingers and thumb, atrophy – wasting away – of the thumb muscles, and permanent damage to the median nerve.

Natural remedies for carpal tunnel syndrome

Non-drug remedies for carpal tunnel pain relief include:

  • Hand and wrist exercises

  • Vitamin supplements
  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic

Hand and wrist pain

The hand is a complex and fragile structure containing 27 bones. The joints and muscles of the hand enable precise, strong movements, but they’re prone to damage.

Hand and wrist pain can originate in the joints, bones, tendons, connective tissue, and nerves.

Causes of hand and wrist pain include:

  • Repetitive motion injuries.
  • Inflammation.
  • Sprains and fractures.
  • Nerve damage.
  • A chronic health condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Finger pain

Arthritis in the hand often causes inflammation of the joints in the fingers, characterised by swelling and/or redness.

Other causes of finger pain include bruising, dislocation, and fractures of the bone.

Medical conditions such as diabetes can cause peripheral neuropathy – nerve damage resulting in pain or tingling in the fingers.

People, more so women, aged 40 – 60 may experience trigger finger – a painful condition that causes your fingers or thumb to lock when you bend them. Symptoms of trigger finger include stiffness or a clicking sound when you move your finger.

Diagnosing hand and wrist problems

Symptoms of hand, wrist, and finger ailments include:

  • A stinging or burning sensation.
  • Stiffness, numbness, or tingling.
  • Tenderness or swelling.
  • Difficulty in movement.
  • A lump or bump on the palm, wrist, or fingers.

Natural remedies for hand and wrist pain treatment

Prescription or over-the-counter pain medication for hand and wrist problems may lead to other health issues and side effects. This is why so many people seek natural remedies or use home treatments such as:

  • Rest.
  • Ice pack.
  • Avoiding sleeping on your hands, which can hinder blood flow.
  • Taking a break from activities that may be causing the problem.
  • Chiropractic treatment.

Are you suffering from a pain?
Chiropractic may be just what you need to alleviate it.

Chiropractic treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome and other hand and wrist pains

Dr David Liew will be able to tell if the pain in your hand or wrist is being caused by problems in your back or neck. If this is the case, chiropractic can provide the ideal, natural remedy through spinal manipulation.

Direct thrust entails applying pressure to the spine by hand. These short, quick movements promote correct alignment of the vertebrae to ease pressure on the nerves that lead to your hands.

This technique may also involve the use of a small, hand-held, spring-loaded device called an activator adjusting instrument, which is used to apply moderate pressure to the spine with a low-force impulse.

Dr David Liew may treat carpal tunnel syndrome with gentle manipulation of the wrist. Elbow manipulation can also be beneficial in chiropractic treatment for carpal tunnel issues.

Techniques for wrist and elbow treatment include:

  • Myofascial release. This manipulates muscles and other soft tissue to improve blood circulation and flexibility.
  • Trigger point therapy. This manual compression and stretching addresses problems of tight areas of muscle tissue.

What’s more, chiropractic massage applied directly to the hand and wrist can ease pain by reducing inflammation.
